"Through cold and ice, a young man must go."

Just before sunrise on an icy December morning and armed with only a thin layer of neoprene, Jordan wades into the frigid waters, forsaking comfort, coerced by the need to fish. Each breath of air cuts his lungs. Every inch of exposed skin cracks under the freezing winds. And yet, Jordan's only focus is this cast.

Production struggled through a similar situation. We found ourselves fighting the cold; knee-deep in the Deschutes River, nearly running out of gas and inching our way home through the chaotic highways all the way back to the editing bay. Three months later, the project has come to fruition.

LaCie came to Funnelbox with a need to showcase their new product, the LaCie Fuel, and Funnelbox's creatives brainstormed and presented three concepts. A traveling concept was chosen, which later morphed into the creative that became the final spot: traveling friends in a beautiful outdoor setting - something we have a good deal of here in Oregon. Over two days and nights, we shot in the Gorge and around Portland, and the result is a wonderfully easygoing and appealing video that demonstrates the benefits of the LaCie product.

Clinkle needed an awesome video that would drive brand awareness for their Silicon Valley startup. In 2013, Clinkle approached us with a dramatically and digitally ambitious creative concept. In a whirlwind pre-production process, our team brainstormed, researched and planned this challenging idea - an idea that required our entire production team be on exactly the same page to be able to pull it off. We were also quite fortunate to cast some strong talent; over two long days, we shot at four locations with a sizable cast.  We are proud of our execution of the production plan, and very happy with the finished video, which won a bronze telly in 2014.

After the success of the Lark Sleep Coach, Lark entered the health monitoring business. Once they had a prototype up and running, Lark looked to Funnelbox to generate awareness of their new direction and demonstrate the value of their new product. The video has been used in many different applications, and has helped to successfully launch Lark into the health monitoring market.

Gard came to Funnelbox with the script and the talent - we executed on Gard's vision.  This spot is a great example of how purposeful shots can successfully communicate a message in 30 seconds.

Xerox ConnectKey and Smith Agency came to Funnelbox because of our solid production capabilities. Believe it or not, Funnelbox filmed everything in less than one and a half days and used only three locations. We were also thrilled to participate in the time-lapse section of the piece.

Courageous Carl: Power Challenge

As part of a marketing campaign, Funnelbox Production Studios was hired by creative agency BestLight Creative to produce a series of humorous videos for Hotsy Pressure Washers. Funnelbox took the lead in creating the character of Courageous Carl Payne, a retired daredevil brought in to test the cleaning ability, ruggedness and sheer power of the Hotsy pressure washer.

 

Production challenges included finding the right location, the right actor and the right visual techniques to pull-off Carl’s ‘stunts’. First, Funnelbox producer James Horn scouted nearly a dozen locations to find just the right ‘warehouse’ setting called out in the scripts. Meanwhile, director Robb Crocker, along with representatives from BestLight Creative, held extensive casting calls to find the man who would become Courageous Carl Payne.

 

With a remote location secured and a talented improv actor filling the lead role, production began early on a cold December morning. The crew worked quickly, bundled against the chill in the unheated warehouse; Courageous Carl and the ‘Hotsy R&D Team’ huddled over propane heaters in their thin wardrobe. Visual Effects Supervisor McKay Marshall conferred with the camera crew, props and art departments to ensure each ‘stunt’ was filmed correctly for post-production compositing. Cameras rolled.

 

After a day filled with improvised posturing from Carl, and the execution of several stunts by a real stuntman, filming was wrapped and the footage turned-over to the post-production team. Thanks to extensive pre-production planning and rigorous attention to detail during the shoot, compositing sequences for the Hummer and moped stunts were completed in record time. The results include special effects on par with a major motion picture, and three hilarious videos to make visitors to Hotsy’s corporate website cringe for the hapless Hotsy Hero, Courageous Carl Payne.

Funnelbox and Celluon collaborated in early September 2013 to formulate a lifestyle piece focusing on the functionality and portability of their newest product the Epic, a mobile projection keyboard and multi-touch mouse solution. This laser keyboard pairs with just about any bluetooth device. Years ago, a product like this only existed in sci-fi movies.  Now you can carry it around in your back pocket without breaking your piggy bank. This video features a young professional accomplishing his work in a number of locations.
